Abstract ARTIST’s Prize:
$500 CASH AWARD for “BEST 2-Dimensional Image”
For this award, Abstract will consider submissions of up to 3 previously unpublished original images in any medium, style, or genre. All images should be titled or captioned, and titles and captions should be set in 12-point Times New Roman. The submitter’s name and contact information should appear as part of each caption. The images to be considered should be contained in a single file. Images must be provided with a resolution of at least 300 dpi or greater, and as a .tiff or .jpg that can be reproduced at 1,650 pixels wide.
All images in submission for the Abstract Artist’s Prize are eligible for the $500 award as well as for publication in the magazine, in the Abstract blog, and for promotion through Abstract’s social media presence. As a condition of publication, Abstract reserves First North American Rights and one-time worldwide Internet rights to new work. Abstract also reserves the right to permanently archive the work(s) online and to consider it/them for an annual anthology release. Thirty (30) days following publication, all other rights revert to the artist. In the event new work(s) first appearing in Abstract is/are reprinted elsewhere, Abstract should be credited as the first publisher.
Each submission should be accompanied by a $12 judging fee, payable through the Submissions manager. Artists may offer more than one submission, but each submission must be accompanied by a separate $12 reading fee.
Abstract accepts simultaneous submissions. Submitters should immediately notify Abstract by email to [email protected] if work under consideration for the Abstract Artist’s Prize is accepted elsewhere. Abstract’s judging fees are not refundable.
Submitters should include a short cover letter containing the titles and captions of the works submitted, the submitter’s contact information, a third-person biographical profile (up to 50 words) that references the submitter’s background, and a recent publication history that may list up to three publications.
The 2017 judging period for the Abstract Artist’s Prize opens March 15 and closes June 15. A winner will be announced July 4.
Abstract editorial staff will screen for 10 finalists. A winner will be selected by the contest judge.
The judge for this year’s prize is Jack Jordan, Emeritus Professor of Art. He holds degrees in Architecture from the University of Texas (B Arch, 1970) and Yale University (M Arch, 1974). He taught at Auburn University and The University of Oklahoma. He holds awards as Regents Professor for Excellence in Teaching at The University of Oklahoma as well as Outstanding Professor from each of the institutions where he taught. His creative work in both disciplines has been in juried competitions. He has numerous juried papers focused on Beginning Design and is included in three editions of an international journal on Beginning Design. He is the author of Foundations in Architecture and organizer of an internationally attended symposium based on the book.
